Who are we?

We are an organization dedicated to saving and sharing cultural stories both ancient and new. Why we chose Bear Medicine as our name. Our CTO and VP is of Apache and Cherokee heritage and belongs to the Bear Clan. Bear medicine invokes an animal completely in touch with the earth, nature and the seasons of the earth and life, it is a powerful guide and support in physical and emotional healing. We found these to be true of the work we wanted to accomplish in our lifetime.

The bear, a spirit animal symbolic of strength and courage

The spirit of the bear is a strong source of support in times of difficulty. It provides courage and a stable foundation to face challenges. When the bear shows up as a spirit guide in your life, it’s perhaps time to stand for your beliefs or your truth. This power totem will provide for support and strength.

The bear is also a guide to take leadership in your life or in other people’s lives. This animal is feared and admired for its strength. Its presence inspires respect. Its strength and powerful stature will inspire you to step into a leadership role in your life and take action without fear.

When you invoke the power of the bear totem, reflect on the qualities of inner strength, fearlessness, and confidence in yourself and how you can project them in your world.

The bear has several meanings that will inspire those who practice Bear Medicine and have them as totem:

  • The primary meaning of the bear spirit animal is strength and confidence
  • Standing against adversity; taking action and leadership
  • The spirit of the the bear indicates it’s time for healing or using healing abilities to help self or others
  • The bear medicine emphasizes the importance of solitude, quiet time, rest
    • The spirit of the bear provides strong grounding forces.

It is in this spirit that we began Bear Medicine Publishing. We saw the need and are now seeking to address the lack of culturally relevant educational materials around the world. The lack of the relevant materials in curriculum is a sad and yet simple issue to address.

Mission

Language Preservation

Bear Medicine Publishing intervenes in the accelerated rate of cultural diffusion today and the implications on the language survival of smaller ethnic groups; we believe that with the death of native language comes the extinction of smaller cultural realities. By writing/recording the language in children’s books, we offer children, families and teachers an opportunity to read together, helping to preserve the life of a culture.

Cultural Heritage Preservation

Bear Medicine Publishing preserves and tells the cultural stories of our ancestors and passes them on to future generations. We foster social consciousness in children and their parents and have a small hand in perpetuating Native, ancient, endangered foreign languages and oral traditions.

Impart Values

Whether the stories we publish are ancient or recent, they tell of morals, values, help us identify with and understanding nature and our environment. The stories teach social, coping and problem solving skills, address goals and promote mental well-being and interaction between the elders, the young and the environment.
